During a stroke, every minute counts. Two million brain cells die each minute after a stroke starts. The sooner blood flow is restored to the brain, the less risk of permanent brain damage, disability, or death.Â
Hudson Regional Hospital’s designation as a Primary Stroke Center allows stroke patients in Hudson County more immediate access to emergency care in the critical minutes after stroke symptoms first appear. The chances of survival and limited long-term disability are greater when emergency treatment is given quickly. All Emergency Room physicians, nurses, and staff have been given special training on how to quickly assess patients who are experiencing a stroke and proceed with appropriate treatment. We are proud to provide life-saving stroke care, all while patients can be comforted knowing they are close to home.

Signs of a Stroke
Hudson Regional Hospitals encourages everyone to learn the signs of stroke and BE FAST. Knowing how to spot a stroke can save the life of someone you love.
B - Balance
Does the person have a sudden loss of balance or coordination?
E - Eyes
Is your loved one experiencing double vision or are they unable to see out of one eye?
F – Face
Is one side of the face drooping? Ask the person to smile
A – Arms
Can they raise their arms? Does one arm drift downward?
S – Speech
Are they slurring their speech or having difficulty getting the words out right? Have the person repeat a simple phrase
T – Time
If you observe any of these signs, call 911 immediately and ask to be taken to the nearest Primary Stroke Center
Stroke Prevention
According to the CDC, 80% of strokes are preventable. Routine evaluation by your doctor is key to stroke prevention. Consult with your doctor to isolate your risk factors and form a plan of care.
Know Your Risk Factors
According to the American Heart Association, until age 75, men are more likely than women to have a stroke
Your risk of stroke is â…“ higher if your father, mother, brother, or sister has had a stroke
High blood pressure contributes to blockages and clots that lead to ischemic stroke
If you have diabetes, your risk of stroke 1.5 times higher
A BMI (body mass index) of 25 or higher increases cardiovascular risk that can lead to stroke

Eat a healthy diet and increase physical activity to maintain a healthy weight

Stroke Rehabilitation
In addition to emergency medicine, Hudson Regional Hospital offers resources and services to help with recovery after a stroke. A stroke can cause long-term disability or brain damage, which is why our care doesn’t stop at the Emergency Room doors. Our concierge staff act as liaisons to other departments and services within the hospital, from booking transportation to scheduling follow-up appointments. Hudson Regional Hospital also offers a community outreach program that includes virtual classes in English and Spanish on the topic of stroke prevention and warning signs.
