Bio
David MS Shein, MD received his medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1978. After completing his internship in 1979, he spent one year as an anatomy and embryology lecturer and lab instructor at the medical school. He became a member of the General Medical Council of Great Britain and successfully completed the US medical licensing exams. He then spent 1 year as a medical officer in England, after which he completed his general surgical residency at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. In 1987, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency and became a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa.
In 1988, he was elected as Orthopaedic Unit Chief consultant at Hillbrow Hospital in Johannesburg. This highly prestigious Orthopaedic Unit was a premier part of the Witwatersrand University Orthopaedic rotation. He spent this fellowship equivalent year involved in intensive training in complex Spinal and Joint Replacement Surgery.
In 1989, he joined a busy joint replacement and spinal surgery practice in Durban, South Africa. Spinal surgery was performed on a routine basis in combination with a senior neurosurgeon. This included the management of degenerative lumbar and cervical spine problems as well as thoracolumbar scoliosis surgery and spinal trauma. It was during this time that he began work involved in severe bone loss resulting from osteolysis in loosened joint replacements. He spent a period of time at the Maurice Muller Institute in Berne, Switzerland learning the techniques of bone restoration that were developed by Heinz Wagner. Back in Durban, South Africa he instituted and modified the learned technique with extremely successful outcomes. In 1991, he traveled to Manchester England, where he spent an extended period working with Sir John Charnley’s team of hip replacement specialists.
In April 1994, Dr. Shein presented his work with bone loss and restoration techniques in New York, earning an invitation onto the orthopaedic faculty at Montefiore Medical Center. He took on the position of Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center, Jacobi Medical Center, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
In 1996, he was named among the 100 Best Doctors of New York and in 1998 successfully completed his Board Certification in Orthopaedic Surgery, becoming a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
In 1997, he created the Musculoskeletal Oncology service at Montefiore Medical Center, where he served at director of Musculoskeletal Oncology surgery for 7 years. During that time, he enjoyed a close association with internationally renowned bone pathologist, Dr. Howard Dorfman. The Sarcoma Service that was developed by Dr. Shein and Dr. Dorfman managed over 60 primary bone tumors per year.
In his 10 years on faculty at Montefiore, Dr. Shein received the annual Faculty Teaching Award 4 times.
Dr. Shein’s major interests include complex Spinal Surgery and Adult Reconstructive Hip & Knee Replacement surgery. He has spent his career understanding the intricate relationships between these seemingly separate fields.
For 25 years, Dr. Shein has been a referral surgeon for many joint replacement and spinal orthopaedic surgeons in the New York area, as he treats highly complex cases often requiring revision & salvage surgery.
His passion for his work is unique and is well recognized by his patients and his colleagues.
